Just a few months later on YouTube launched in 2005, teenagers Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla joined forces to create goofy lip-synch videos of their favorite theme songs. Posted nether the username Smosh, the duo's antics became ane of the website's most popular channels—and with ii movies, 41 meg subscribers and a host of new content, Smosh shows no signs of slowing.

Hecox recently chatted with Parade.com about Smosh'southward ascent to YouTube fame, his sense of humor and the futurity of the channel.

How did Smosh go started?

The videos began when my friend Anthony Padilla (who left Smosh last year) and I began making mostly lip-synch videos to our favorite babyhood theme songs in 2005. The main purpose was to simply entertain ourselves. When we began uploading to YouTube belatedly 2005, a few of these videos began getting a lot of attention, with our Pokemon Theme Vocal Music Video condign the nearly viewed video on YouTube for over a year. We decided to transition away from lip-synch videos to original sketch comedy, and over the course of virtually 13 years, Smosh has evolved into what you lot encounter today!

What was the turning point for Smosh?

The major turning signal was in 2007 when YouTube asked us to be in their newly created Partner Plan. We were one of the first ten channels to accept ads on our videos and really first earning income from YouTube. This allowed u.s.a. to focus on Smosh full time and care for it like a legitimate career.

How did you handle being ane of YouTube's first sensations? It seems similar a different sort of fame.

From the beginning, I idea the claim of usa being famous was ridiculous, but occasionally I am recognized in public, and I don't call up I'll always get used to information technology. However, internet fame is very different from other kinds of fame. If you're cyberspace famous, y'all're exist a big deal to a very small percentage of the population, and the residual of the globe will accept no inkling who you lot are. Also, for the start several years, no i in old media took usa seriously and saw this YouTube thing equally a passing trend. Only in contempo years has the platform been truly taken seriously past those in old media.

How would you lot depict your sense of humor?

In some cases, a little too nighttime or inappropriate for YouTube. Only nearly of my existent joke pitches outset with "OK, this is probably a bad idea—this is a really stupid, dumb thought and it probably won't piece of work—simply what if…"

The brand has already expanded so much—how do you run into it growing in the future?

Nosotros've made a couple movies (Smosh: The Movie and Ghostmates) and an original series (Function Timers), and every fourth dimension we do a long-course narrative, we go meliorate at it. I'one thousand most excited to see what else we can practise with long-form. Nosotros've besides seen huge growth on Facebook and Instagram and have started strategically programming against those platforms. And so I think the primal is to always remain open to change.

Do you call back there will exist a bespeak where you will stride away from Smosh to focus on other endeavors?

I've been doing Smosh for virtually xiii years, and sometimes I forget how fortunate I am. My job consists of me going to a identify every weekday where I pitch and hash out comedy with a bunch of other funny, driven people. Obviously it's not ever perfect, but even then, how is that non a dream chore?  And the fact that my work through the years has given many of the people around me total-time employment is something I am very proud of. In regards to other endeavors, I'm always open to other opportunities, but Smosh is my main focus.

What'due south it like having younger fans who were born around the time YouTube was getting started?

That'south the crazy thing almost how long I've been in the YouTube game. We've had viewers who started watching us early on in simple or high schoolhouse and are now married with kids and still watching. But when we practice some sort of throwback to something very early with Smosh, there take been comments similar "I was v when y'all made that," and that blows my mind. The net moves and so apace, and every year internet sensations come and get, and I count myself very fortunate to accept created something long lasting.

Do y'all take a favorite video?

Of recent memory, i of my favorites was our Clandestine to Instagram Comedy we did terminal twelvemonth. Information technology was a sketch I wrote that satirizes a certain type of comedian that was very pop on Instagram. Information technology was the perfect subject to lampoon, just I also viewed it as a public service to telephone call out the beliefs I was seeing beingness rewarded on at that place.
